I had a liberating moment in art college. I asked Professor Walker, "What do I do if it all comes wrong?"
He replied, with a lovely smile, "Well, you can wipe it all off and start all over once again."
There's a deep, khol philosophy in that, if you think about it.
My Art Statement is based somewhat on it. I'm an intuitive painter, majorly influenced by music, and when I want to theorize I do it in words, off-canvas so to speak.
Which means my art is not about searching for deep, hidden life truths or grappling with incomprehensible psychological polemics. Nor is it about portraying social, cultural and political issues.
All I'm really interested in is in achieving a visual balance from my perspective - of colors, of shapes, of textures, of ideas - and, of course, having a lot of fun while I am at it. My paintings are not planned, they develop. The painting comes first and then the title - and the title may be anything that catches my fancy at that particular moment.
I work in a variety of media - Oil, Acrylic, Gouache, Water-color, Ink, Pastels, Charcoal, Pen, Pencil, Digital, Collage, Papier Mache and Clay. I've always been drawn to figurative art and, with oil painting and acrylic painting, I adore painting in impasto style with knife. I long thought water-color painting was too delicate for me, but I've outgrown that notion since I stopped thinking about water-colors and actually started painting with them.
And pastels and charcoal, what can I say, except I enjoy scrubbing and smearing and layering. I'm pretty nifty with pen and ink and pencil. And collage, some part of me gets deep satisfaction from tearing up paper and scrap and gluing and reconstructing it into something interesting.
I began working in papier mache and clay more recently; I always wanted to do sculpture, so now I do. In digital media, painting with GIMP and ArtRage has its benefits; no clutter to clear up.
I love creating art myself and I love looking at the works created by other artists. One of the best things about the Internet is how convenient it is to view artworks from around the world and be inspired in the finest possible sense of the word.
Too many artists out there to like and admire.
